Where to ride around Tokyo

If you're wondering where to do a day tour around Tokyo on a bike, we've curated some of the recommended routes around Tokyo where you won't be interrupted by heavy traffic.

Arakawa riverside

Arakawa, a major river that flows through eastern Tokyo, offers a scenic bike path stretching over 80 kilometers into Saitama Prefecture. If you’re looking for a delightful half-day ride, this route is a must-try. It takes you to breathtaking views of Tokyo Bay at the southern end and the iconic Tokyo skyline, featuring the towering skyscrapers of Ohtemachi CBD and Tokyo Skytree. This is an example route I set, starting from Tokyo Station. (Strava route) First, head eastward through the downtown area of Tokyo. Then, you’ll reach the south end of the Arakawa River. From there, head to the estuary of the river, where you’ll find Kasai Rinkai Park. This park is known for its ocean views and a Ferris wheel. You could take a break, grab a drink, and relax for a while. Afterward, take the bike path northward. The bike path takes you back and forth on both sides of the river, but it’s easy to follow. You could cycle all the way up to Saitama, but we usually recommend stopping by BRÜCKE coffee  for a rest before heading southward. Upon returning to Tokyo Station, where this route began, you’ll have the chance to fly by Sensoji Temple and Akihabara, both of which are must-see attractions for tourists. Cycling through Akihabara offers a unique perspective compared to walking, and we highly recommend finishing your trip with this experience.

Tama River cycling road

Tama River, another significant river in Tokyo, flows along the southern border of Tokyo Prefecture. We’ve created this Strava route, which begins at Tokyo Station, passes through Shibuya, and then follows the Tama River, taking a western route for a while until Seiseki Sakuragaoka, the town featured in the Ghibli movie “Whisper of the Heart.” If you’re a fan of Ghibli movies, the landscape you see from the top of Sakuragaoka Park is exactly the same as in the movie. Also, if you really wanna recreate the scene where Seiji cycles up the steep hill, you can climb up the Iroha-zaka slope in the area. Afterward, we continue the route eastward, all the way to Haneda International Airport, situated at the estuary of the Tama River. From there, we cycle north back to Tokyo Station. On the final stretch, we pass through the bustling business district, complete with towering skyscrapers, including Tokyo Tower. This route offers a perfect blend of nature and the vibrant energy of Tokyo.

These are just a few suggestions. Tokyo, a sprawling metropolis, offers an endless array of exploration opportunities. Bicycling through its streets is a fantastic way to discover hidden gems and immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant culture. Embrace your curiosity and embark on an unforgettable journey through Tokyo’s hidden corners.
